The Paviors Joy
The Paviors Joy
1186
This fairly early and rare print shows a group of paviors, or paving workers, outside the Tun Tavern. The paviors hold rammers that look like large bottles. A cleric walks over the paving and the paviors cheer. On the left is a woman with a basket on her head, and a pavior holds a cobblestone and a pickaxe.
There are examples in the Royal Collection, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. The inscription on the other known copies of this print reads 'When J-x walks the streets, the Paviors cry / God bless you Sir & lay their rammers by.'
