The Railway Hotel, Stalham, Norfolk Broads
The Railway Hotel, Stalham, Norfolk Broads
Harold Percival A.R.E
1221
Percival seems to have emerged fully-formed as a highly competent etcher, here capturing a scene at Stalham, a picturesque village on the Norfolk Broads with verve and excellent tonal modulation.. The Great Yarmouth and Stalham Light Railway reached Stalham in 1880, eventually becoming part of the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway. Having been renamed The Grebe in 1937, the Railway Hotel took a direct bomb hit in October 1940, and was rebuilt inthe early 1950s.
We have not seen any record of other Percival etchings appearing on the market, and it may be that this example and its companion on this website, both prints made from the original plates in the late 20th century, are unique survivors of Percival's skills as an etcher.
