In an elegant drawing room, Mr Ego holds forth. His story has caused a footman to turn to listen and drop his tray, tipping over another servant's plate of food.
'Mr. Ego’s Marvellous Story' was published opposite page 40 of 'The Pleasures of Human Life' by Hilari Benevolus & Co. (pseudonym of John Britton, 1771-1857).
The original plate for this etching is in the collection of Princeton University. Other examples of the hand-coloured print are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and Harvard Art Museums.
