Boats Drawn up on a Beach (Aldeburgh?)
Boats Drawn up on a Beach (Aldeburgh?)
John Humphrey Spender

This study of boats drawn up on a beach, perhaps at Aldeburgh in Suffolk, is attributed to Humphrey Spender. Certainly, the design, with colourfully striped boats ranged horizontally across the foreground, is a favourite Humphrey Spender motif.
It is difficult to reconcile the arrangement of buildings and huts with a specific stretch of Aldeburgh's Crag Path beachfront, but the building types and setting are very reminiscent of the town, in particular the area around the South Lookout and former Peter Pears Gallery, where Humphrey Spender's work has been shown.
