Matthew Xavier Carr

1953 - 2011

Carr studied at Camberwell School of Art and Cheltenham School of Art from 1972–4, moving on to Cheltenham School of Art from 1972-4. He was the son of historian Sir Raymond Carr, and for a time taught art history in Oxford. In 1977, he persuaded his parents to allow Andy Warhol to throw a party in the family home. Warhol liked his drawings and took him to America to show at his gallery in New York. Unfortunately, his new lifestyle there also led to drug addiction, which affected his career development. Nevertheless, he had a number of exhibitions at London galleries from 1983, including the Robert Fraser Gallery, Wildenstein and Marlborough Fine Art, 2003. Carr's predominant work was monochrome, intensely scrutinising his subjects in close-up.
