Howard Phipps R.W.A, A.R.E

1954

Born in Colwyn Bay, Phipps studied painting and printmaking at Gloucestershire College of Art in Cheltenham from 1971-75, followed by a year at Brighton before starting teaching at Plymouth until 1980. He then moved to live near Salisbury and since then has drawn on the local countryside and rivers for many of the wood engravings, for which he is primarily known. Phipps was elected to the Royal West of England Academy in 1979, the Society of Wood Engravers in 1985, and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 2021.. As well as outstanding technique and compositions, what perhaps especially distinguishes Phipps’ wood engravings is the outstanding handling of light and shade. His work has been extensively acquired by museums and private collectors.
