This very rare wine label is oval in form with a gadrooned rim. It is engraved with the exceptionally rare title of LACHRYMAE CHRISTI. The label is very well marked and in excellent condition, with fine niello filled lettering. The engraving is most unusual, as the engraver has conjoined the letters A and E at the end to save space. Lachrymae Christi (Tears of Christ) is an old Italian wine of the Neapolitan type produced on the slopes of Mount Versuvius in Campania. The wine can be white, rose or red and is thought to be the closest equivalent to that drunk by the ancient Romans. This label also came from a set which were made from the Dukes of Westminster and which were sold at Christie's in 2004.
Length: 1.75 inches, 4.38 cm.
