This magnificent piece has a large, slightly tapering, form with spreading foot and lower frieze decorated with a wide band of trailing acorns, oak leaves and hop bines, in raised relief on a matted ground. The hinged cover is decorated with radiating gadroons centred by a Tudor Rose motif. The cast thumb piece is decorated with a Rococo shell, flanked by scrolls and flower heads. The cast spout is chased with formal acanthus foliage. The substantial scroll handle displays fruiting foliate mouldings, where it is attached to the main body, and is decorated with leaf capping and a berried laurel band down its length. The front of the Jug is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with Crest above, all surrounded by a pluming scroll cartouche. The Arms and Crest are those of Vaughan of Court Field, Herefordshire . They are specifically those of William Michael Thomas Vaughan (1781-1861). The family were prominent Catholics.
The Jug is of a large size and substantial weight. It is fully marked on the side of the main body and on the rim of the cover. It is in excellent, crisp, condition and displays a gilded interior. These rare Jugs would have been used to fill up the very rare Beer Cups, also made by Storr, which hardly ever appear on the market. As you will appreciate, wine and beer related silver was not made in great quantity by Paul Storr.
Height, to the top of the thumbpiece: 9 inches, 22.5 cm.
Length, handle to spout: 10.5 inches, 26.25 cm
Weight: A substantial 65oz.
