This very rare piece stands on an oval cast spreading foot decorated with reeding. The baluster shaped, elongated, main body is chased with scrolls, shells and floral sprays in the typical Scots manner. The front displays a vacant scroll and Rococo shell cartouche. The rim is everted and is also beautifully chased with foliate scrolls and shell details. The handle is realistically modelled as a finely detailed dolphin in exceptionally crisp condition. The Sauceboat is of a good size and is in excellent condition, with no wear to the chasing. The base displays a crisp set of hallmarks. Dolphin sauceboats are known to have been made in Newcastle and Edinburgh, however examples seldom appear. Due to its rarity, it was contained within the Dr Christine & Jim Chance Collection of Sauceboats. Some of their collection was left to, and is on display at, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
