Glazed ceramic planter by Jacques Blin, circa 1960, decorated with a continuous frieze of stylized fish and mermaids. An important figure in post-war French ceramics, Jacques Blin (1920-1995) established his workshop in the early 1950s and developed a highly distinctive language combining simple forms, subtly toned glazes and incised decoration populated by animals and stylized figures.

The cylindrical form is covered with an ochre glaze nuanced with brown and black, with the fishes and mermaids drawn directly into the surface through incision. Hatching, dotted patterns and engraved lines animate their silhouettes, creating a graphic frieze around the entire piece. The ivory-glazed interior provides a luminous contrast with the ochre exterior.

The use of incision and subtle variations in the glaze give each piece its individual character and are among the most recognizable features of Jacques Blin's ceramic work during the 1950s and 1960s.
